Colorado Desert Wildflowers: A Guide to Flowering Plants
of the Low Desert, Including the Coachella Valley, Anza-Borrego Desert,
and Portions of Joshua Tree National Monument. Text and photographs
by Jon Mark Stewart. 1993. 120 pages with index. ISBN 0-9634909-0-7.
$12.95, paper.
This is an introduction to the flowering plants in a very specific area. It is a beginner-level guide with one large photograph of a flower and 75-100 tightly written words of text on each of 114 pages.
The plants are arranged by color, a definite aid to finding things in a hurry. The book is of a good size and weight to fit into a pack or purse.
Colorado Desert Wildflowers was published nine years before The Jepson Desert Manual, the current ranking authority on plant names. Unfortunately, Jepson makes obsolete some of the names Stewart uses such as Desert Aster for Orcutt's Woody-Aster, Ferocactus acanthodes for Ferocactus cylandraceus, and Dune Primrose for Dune Evening-Primrose, the name you are likely to hear at the ABDNHA Nature Center and which the Morhardts use.
