Anza-Borrego North: Driving & Hiking

Santa Rosa Mountains: The Way Down
With the Santa Rosa Mountains and Coyote Canyon, Anza-Borrego North is hiker country. Long hikes, short hikes, write your own ticket.
It's also common for people with trucks and cars to drive and hike. Popular destinations include Desert Gardens, Palo Verde Canyon, Smoke Tree Canyon, and the Calcite Mine. For a little climb for a view, consider Alcoholic Pass, Coyote Mountain, or the ridge to Villager Peak.
Other favorite destinations for day hikes include the South Fork Palm Wash slot canyon (described by Halford), the North Fork Palm Canyon sheep tanks, and the Smoke Tree Canyon natural rock tanks.
Anza-Borrego North is not a place of wide-open roads for driving great distances. The mountains see to that. The longest roads in the area are the Rockhouse Canyon Road and Palm Wash. Both are less than 10 miles long.
The Coyote Canyon Jeep Trail is about 12 miles from south to the north closure at Middle Willows, but after five miles and Third Crossing you come to a boulder-strewn point in the road that should only be attempted by vehicles with very high clearance and driven by experienced drivers.
